I went through a couple of fairly-finished sketches before I settled for the one below. The sketch on the left needed more than just an ear to fill the space, so it was out, but I really didn't have a problem with the one on the right. I just thought that with the fat end up, the zucchini would fill the space better. I also thought the zucchini blocked too much of Queenie, so I changed the idea to more of a "What else is in there?" pose.

Just to show you how tunnel vision can obscure things: Right from the thumbnail stage, I "knew" I had to have a rabbit because I would need the ears to fill the upper part of the Z. But also at the thumbnail stage, I thought of a twist to Zucchini Queenie...and one that I really wanted to do. I wanted to use a dachshund instead of a rabbit and then call it Zucchini Weinie. Trouble was, I didn't know how to fill the Z with a dachshund's ears...Gale Force 9? (I don't know why I thought that only ears could fill that space).

The worst of it is that, once I put the fat part of the zucchini up there, I could have used practically any animal I wanted, including the dachshund, but suffering from the dreaded Bunny Fixation like I was, it wasn't until the final painting stage that I realized how I'd lost my chance... (well, not lost exactly. I mean I could do the entire letter again, and have two similar Zs. Uh huh. It could happen.)
