WASHDAY WISEGUY...

The W, along with the O and Q, probably
gives me more grief than any other letter (oh yeah, I forgot the B,
and the K, and the...anyway, the W is hard). That shape is very difficult
for me to manipulate an idea around. This one started out as an M,
but in my desperate search (and it often becomes that) for a W idea,
it became something else...it is kind of interesting how an idea for
one letter fits rather conveniently into what is basically that letter's
opposite. You can see what I mean by clicking on the thumbnail thumbnail
at left (speaking of which, I don't know what screen resolution you
are using so I don't know what size the thumbnail seems to be on your
screen, but most of the original thumbnails in my sketchbook are around
three-fourths to an inch in height...just enough to record the idea.
In fact, I often have to enlarge the thumbnail so you can see it).

| There
were quite a few sketches before I finally ended up with this. |

The
line drawing for transfer to the final surface. I moved the laundry
basket to the front of the bear for added depth. I didn't like the
position of the head--it isn't clear that the bear was looking directly
at the dog. I left it as is thinking I could fix it in a following
step.

| The
watercolor dye stage, same as always...just background for the colored
pencils. |

Colored
pencil step...almost done. I redid the head, and it's much better,
I think. |
| Acrylic
paint added (quite a bit of it this time) to strengthen contrasts,
add pattern to the laundry and basically finish things up. |
