The thumbnail sketch as it appears in my sketchbook. These things are merely visual jottings of ideas, scribbled so they're not forgotten. This one has been around for years...unused mainly because a "Q" caption didn't spring to mind right away (and since my attention span rivals that of a sparrow, well...).
Where was I? Oh yeah...

I did many of these full-size sketches before I finally decided on this one. I tried other animals, too (for instance, a duck yelling "Quaaack!!"), but I decided to stay with the bear.
The sketch after reference photos of bears, surfboards and surfers have been consulted (I looked for photos of bears in swimming suits surfing but didn't have much luck).
Always the first step once the drawing has been transferred to the final painting surface: Watercolors to serve as the background for the colored pencils to come.
About the design on the surfboard: I had searched the Web for actual surfboard designs (I didn't want to copy specific designs, just to see what surfers have on their boards), but I happened to see the Dark Side of the Moon CD cover by chance and thought it might be fun to adapt that...just an example of the little things I often indulge in without regard to anyone else. I can be selfish that way.
The main effort: Colored pencils. This is where all the detail work is done.
This is the final product...basically the pencil stage with highlights bolstered by a little acrylic paint (This is also where mistakes hopefully get some camouflage).
