I first envisioned a polar bear gazing
at its reflection with the northern lights (and their reflection)
forming the body of the O.

The
first sketch from the thumbnail. Instead of northern lights, which
fills the sky and wouldn't be constrained to just a circle, I used
an indention in an ice wall. An indention could be any shape I wanted.
I like it, but I felt that because we're so far away, the personality
of the bear might be too hard to perceive. It won't help that the
letter will be reduced when it appears in a name either.
It
works, I think.
The close-up of the polar bear's face as he enjoyed a soak in the
cool (!) water makes it much more personal.
In
the final drawing, I made the bear less cartoony and added bits of
ice floaters to help show that the bottom part of the O is a reflection.
The
watercolor dye stage, same as always.
The
colored pencil step.
Acrylic
paint added to punch up the whitest whites. A couple of other dabs
here and there, but not much. It was 95% complete at the end of the
pencil step.
