This idea came about because I felt I needed an M that was more boy-oriented than the Ms available.
Why snowboarding? I was concerned about filling all that M real estate, and all those changes in direction, and I thought the snowboards could be helpful. I had no real idea in mind when the thumbnail was scribbled down.

Sketchbook
drawing using the same full-sized letter outline I use for all Ms. As I mentioned, I didn't have an overall idea in mind. I just knew there would be multiple snowboarders in various snowboarding positions.
The penquins? They're probably doing this year 'round, so they're naturals.
The final drawing...basically the same as the sketch since
I had been using photos of penguins for reference from the beginning. The main difference is now the snowboards have graphic designs.
Here
the application of water-based
dyes serves as the underpainting for the colored pencils...the same
as every single letter I've ever done in color on white paper. I paid more attention to form this time, not just putting in a background.
The
colored pencil stage where most of the work is done. I was concerned about the medical condition of the unfortunate penguin in the lower left, so I added the "Thumbs Up" to show he's okay.
An application of acrylic paint brings back the highlights, and some darks as well.
