   EXCLAMATION POINT!

This "thumbnail," instead of being the size of my thumb, is full size. When I was asked to develop the exclamation point, the idea of the cow jumping over the moon came right to me. So, after drafting the outline of the !, I went right to work trying to figure out how to make it fit.

This was a relatively difficult "letter" to do. One doesn't normally see a cow straight-on (and overhead), but as it had to fit into that skinny shape, I didn't have many options.

The idea is finally ready to be transferred to the final drawing surface. I use hand-made carbon paper, applying pressure with a red rollerball pen. You can see that in the enlarged view of this stage. Just click on the thumbnail at right.

The watercolor dyes have been applied. You'll notice that the man in the moon is now facing the other way. I thought it was more interesting when the cow is turned one way and the moon the other.

The colored pencil stage--by this time, most of the work is done, but I knew I'd have to fix the bell striker (whatever it's called--I'm not what you'd call "steeped" in bell technology)...anyway, I knew I'd have to finish it in the acrylics stage. I let it get too large, and the translucency of the pencils prevented the necessary coverage. There were other areas, too...

...mostly the usual application of lighter hues to recover the highlights. But I did my usual overworking until I finally got sick of screwing it up after it had been done several times already. So I declared it finished.

I liked the idea of the cow jumping over the moon. I think (hope) it could be the subject for some future real letter.
