   EAT YOUR HEART OUT...

The first whack at the idea with a full-sized E from the template I use to ensure continuity with the other letters. I wanted to like this idea, but it didn't work out when it advanced from this sketchbook drawing to the final line drawing on tracing film sketchbook drawing
Here's the replacement, with the bill amply filling the bill (sorry). Here's an interesting thing about toucans: Their tongues are feathered! Don't know why, or if that's a feature unique to toucans or not, but it's still interesting – a feathered tongue.
After the line drawing is transferred to the paper that holds the final artwork (I use what's called 500 Bristol from Strathmore). The first step once that happens is to paint the image with watercolor dyes (Dr. Martin's). My personal preference is to not have any of the paper showing through where I don't want it. watercolor dyes stage
color pencil step The color pencil stage where the final look is established. I've said it before, but one of the delights and disappointments of these pencils is the translucency of the medium. I really like how the color layers interact with each other, but I can't cover up a mistake as easily as I'd like either. The pencils I used here are probably all Prismacolor. I also have (and use) Derwent pencils, just not on this one . . . no particular reason, other than I have more Prismacolor pencils, none of which are part of a set, so all are organized in containers that are displayed in plain sight and close at hand . . . God forbid I should have to stand up and lean over to get at a set of Derwents (although I have on days when I've felt especially peppy).

The final version of Eat Your Heart Out after the addition of acrylic paint to recover lost highlights and "fix" things.
