   EYE ON THE PRIZE...
This thumbnail sketch was about three quarters of an inch high in my sketchbook. I don't really remember, but, by the looks of it, the original character was going to be an alligator.
The sketch using the E template...pretty close to the final drawing.
This is an outline drawing of the entire letter with the illustration inside. To get it, I traced the sketch, tightening things up and using reference material when required.
When I take my show on the road to arts & crafts shows, I sit around working on a letter or two for demonstration. I don't care to deal with water at a booth like I must do in the studio for the next step, the watercolor step, on-site demos are done only in colored pencil on pastel paper. They're always more fun.
(The letters directly above are a rare exception...this is the next step to follow the final drawing.) Back to my usual procedure--using watercolor dyes to provide a base color for the pencils that follow.
Colored pencils, the workhorse for all the letters.
Acrylic paints added to finish it all off.
