About the Artist, Fred McEntire

"For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in art, especially while growing up in Rocky Grove in western Pennsylvania. But, like a lot of kids, I didn't concentrate on any one thing. In fact, like a lot of kids, I couldn't concentrate on any one thing. Art had to compete for my time with all those other childhood distractions. My art education was limited to my elementary and high school art classes.

"It wasn't until after finishing college and going to work as an engineer that I began to get really serious about wanting to do art. For an evening typography class assignment I drew CIRCUS, my very first illustrated letters. Years later, when I was living in Boston (via Virginia and Idaho), I did RIP VAN WINKLE for a children's book illustration class. The style of those letters is evident in the illustrated lettering I do now.

"I wanted to see my letters in color, so I did BEDTIME and MERRY CHRISTMAS, which led to doing an entire alphabet. I now have over eighty finished letters available from the LETTERS page. I also have rough sketches for over a hundred others, more being added all the time. I can't help it, I'm always looking for opportunities. It almost seems I try to make a letter out of everything I see.

"I'm now living in the Pittsburgh area, where you may see me and my letters from time to time in a booth at an art fair someplace. Although I don't like to take my spare time away from actually creating letters, I do occasionally like to get out and sit around my booth, working on a letter while chatting with pretty much anybody who wants to. I really enjoy getting outdoors to paint the landscape, too, but lately my art has focused on illustrated lettering...indoors.
