   ANXIOUS AMATEUR...
This "thumbnail," instead of being the size of my thumb, is full size. I was getting ready to work on "Ah, Amour" when I got this idea. I had just traced the outline of the A, so I used it to get this idea down.

For a good proportion of letters, I tend to think in terms of bears in the thumbnail stage. It's probably because they're very familiar in the upright position, so they fit the letter shape more easily than most others. Plus, they use their arms and "hands" a lot like humans do.

The idea is fully realized and ready to be transferred to the final drawing surface. At this point the caption was to be "Assisting an Anxious Amateur", but I was afraid it would be too long when printed under the letter in a name... definitely would take two very full lines (not to mention the fact that is a little too "clever"...as in "contrived"). I opted for the shorter "Anxious Amateur."
The watercolor dyes have been applied.
I had gotten carried away with the dyes in the previous step. It took many layers of colored pencil to get to this stage. So many, in fact, that the illustration wouldn't take any more layering. The transparency of the colored pencil and the darkness of the watercolor were working against me.

This is a perfect example of why I need to go in with acrylic paint for the whites I could no longer get by the end of the colored pencil stage.
